In public speaking, how do I stop using meaningless verbal fillers?

QUESTION:

My question is more for help with teaching method or public speaking. In my teaching, or public speaking, I have a tendency to use the phrase "you know" a bit too much. How can I improve on this, and what recommendations would have.

Ivy

ANSWER:

Ivy:

I bet you are a good teacher, but just a little nervous. There are three things I could suggest. First, practice a speech before a mirror for 15 minutes every day all by yourself - without the "you knows." Second, know your material very well before you present it.

Rehearse it often. Third, have a friendly someone in your class raise their hand each time you say, "you know." A fourth uggestion, relaxand have fun while you teach.
