Will my faith save my wife since we are one?

QUESTION: Since Jesus says that once we are married we become one, will my faith save my wife? - Hank

ANSWER: Well, Hank, this question is more difficult. What I mean is that the answer is simple, but accepting it is not easy. Each of us must personally accept Christ as our Savior to be saved. Your faith will not save your wife.

John wrote, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Again he wrote, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 1:36b). Finally, John taught, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12).

Salvation is limited only to those who personally believe, or receive Christ by faith for their salvation. I encourage you to read the articles on salvation in the website. Just to the table of contents, and scroll down until you find the right article.

The experience you refer to by becoming one flesh with your wife at marriage refers to the husband and wife becoming united as two separate personalities in a unique relationship on this earth. Think of it this way, if your wife robbed a bank, would you also be guilty? No. It was her choice, and only she has to go to jail. It is the same with salvation, if you receive Christ, and she does not, then only you go to heaven.

Hank, all the best to you – and your wife. Lead her to Christ. You really must love her.
